We recognise that caring for someone who is experiencing an eating disorder can be extremely distressing and stressful. We offer One to One counselling for friends and family who are currently supporting a loved one with an eating disorder.

This service offers a safe and confidential space to talk about your issues and concerns with an trainee psychotherapist/counsellor. Counselling offers you the opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself, those around you and your relationships. Additionally, our counselling service for Friends and Family will provide education around eating disorders and how best to support someone with an eating disorder.

To access Individual Therapy you will first need to refer yourself for an assessment appointment. Please complete our online Referral Form.

The referral form asks you for some information about your situation, which once submitted will be reviewed by our Carer’s Worker who will be in touch with you to offer you an appointment for an assessment face to face or via telephone or Zoom. In some cases, they might be in touch before an appointment date to obtain further information.

At assessment our Carer’s Worker will discuss what has brought you to SYEDA and what support will be most helpful. This is a collaboration between SYEDA and yourself to help you find the most suitable source of support.

Individual Therapy is currently provided from our office in Sheffield face to face or via telephone or video (zoom).

This service is provided free of charge. To access this service you need to be registered with a GP in South Yorkshire and the person whom you are supporting with an eating disorder does not need to be currently accessing SYEDA’s services.

I remember the relief and hope I felt when I got the call saying I could be offered counselling after being on the waiting list. Counselling was very helpful. It gave me somewhere safe and confidential to discuss my feelings. It gave me a weekly escape. Even if sessions brought out difficult and strong emotions, I felt better afterwards.
