1:1 Psychoeducation Support gives you the opportunity to talk to our carer’s worker about practical skills, strategies, and tips to support you, and your loved one.

What is 1:1 Psychoeducation Support?

Caring for someone who is experiencing an eating disorder can be extremely stressful, overwhelming, and exhausting. Carers often report not knowing what to do, where to turn, or if they are saying and doing the right thing.

At SYEDA, we recognise the huge impact this can have on carers physical and mental health, and it is important that they have support throughout this journey.

Our 1:1 psychoeducation-based sessions are for anyone who is caring for/supporting a loved one who is struggling with an eating disorder. The service offers you a safe and confidential space to discuss your concerns and learn practical skills and techniques to help you support your loved one.

The psychoeducation support is based on a coaching model, as we recognise that carers are the expert in their experience and that there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach to support. Coaching aims to empower you to make change by collaboratively exploring ideas and forming solutions. This means that the Carer’s Worker will act as a sounding board, guide you to find your own way, and offer practical skills to try with your loved one.

Here are some topics that carer’s typically cover within the sessions:

·        Looking at your caring style and approach towards the eating disorder

·        Communication techniques

·        Self-care

·        Boundary setting

·        Mealtimes

·        Handling difficult situations.

This is not an exhaustive list, and any topic you feel relevant to the eating disorder can be discussed.

To access 1:1 Psychoeducation Support Sessions, you will first need to refer yourself for an assessment appointment. Please complete our online Referral Form.

The referral form asks you for some information about your situation, which once submitted will be reviewed by our Carer’s Worker, who will be in touch with you to offer you an appointment for an assessment, which can be offered face to face, via telephone or Teams. In some cases, they might be in touch before an appointment date to obtain further information.

At assessment our Carer’s Worker will discuss your mental and physical health, what has brought you to SYEDA, and what support will be most helpful. This is done collaboratively between SYEDA and yourself, to help you find the most suitable source of support.

Our 1:1 Psychoeducation Support Sessions are currently provided from our office in Sheffield, and can take place face-to-face, via telephone or video (Teams). There are 6 sessions, each lasting 50 minutes.

This service is provided free of charge. To access this service, you need to be registered with a GP in South Yorkshire.  The person whom you are supporting does not need to have an eating disorder diagnosis, or be accessing SYEDA’s services.
