Men and Eating Disorders

  • University of Sheffield PSY353 - Room: DIA at The Diamond 32 Leavygreave Road Sheffield S3 7RD United Kingdom (map)

Approximately 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder. Around 25% of those affected by an eating disorder are male.

We are delighted to host Dr Delderfield from the University of Bradford who will be talking to important research in the field as well as his book "Male Eating Disorders: Experiences of Food, Body and Self". This book takes a novel approach to the study of male eating disorders – an area that is often dominated by clinical discourses. The study of eating disorders in men has purportedly suffered from a lack of dedicated attention to personal and socio-cultural aspects.

We are also honoured to be hearing from Beren Maddison, the Welfare Officer for the Student's Union at the University of Sheffield. After a successful week long event on the topic of eating disorders in males, Beren will be talking about mental health in the student population and the work he is doing to raise awareness and combat the issue.

We are also welcoming to the stage the multi-talented writer, presenter and comedian Dave Chawner who will be remarking on his experiences of living with an eating disorders through a hilrious stand-up routine.

We will finally be hearing from SYEDA service users about their experiences and what they think can help improve access to services for boys and men in the future.

Join us after our Q&A panel where you can wonder our stalls and meet our staff team as well as offer us your ideas!
