Neurodivergence and Eating Disorders: ARFID Module

Understanding ARFID in the UK

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is becoming increasingly recognised across the UK, with a notable rise in the number of individuals seeking support in recent years.

ARFID differs from many other eating disorders in that it is not linked to body image concerns. Instead, it is often associated with sensory sensitivities, fear-based responses around food, or a reduced interest in eating. Despite this, ARFID is still frequently misunderstood or dismissed as “fussy eating,” which can delay access to appropriate support.

Neurodivergence and Eating Disorders

Growing awareness of ARFID highlights the important relationship between neurodivergence and eating disorders. Many individuals with ARFID also identify as neurodivergent, and their experiences of food may be shaped by sensory processing differences, anxiety, or routine-based preferences.

However, a lack of specialist services and awareness means that many people remain undiagnosed or do not receive the support they need. Improving understanding in this area is essential to ensuring inclusive and effective care.

Course Structure

This is the first in a series of e-learning modules exploring neurodivergence and eating disorders. The initial module focuses on ARFID and is divided into two parts:

1. Understanding ARFID
An introduction to ARFID, including key characteristics, causes, and common misconceptions.

2. Supporting Someone with ARFID
Practical guidance on treatment approaches and how to effectively support individuals with ARFID.
